Last weekend, I went into a Big Box store...with my offer in hand.....

The clerk was very friendly, the frame styles and selection were minimal and colored coded by price point. I chose a frame that I know that I carry and it was one of there best frames from which to choose. I also chose the best glass as well. The photograph was 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 double matted; There List Price was $286.40. With 75% off the SALE PRICE WAS $114.92.

Floater Frames: Versatile Design Option

When framing a piece of art on canvas, take a look at a float frame for a different effect. Most mouldings have a lip to hold the art in the frame, but floats have a shelf-like ledges at the back to support it. A float frame is especially important when framing gallery wraps or other canvases when art is painted near the outer edges.
Float frames can stand alone or be used in conjunction with other mouldings, liners, or mats. These frames mostly house contemporary art. However, more conventional pieces can be placed in a float frame with traditional moulding around it to create a more classic look.

When Art is too BIG for the Space?

This summer we had a client that was redorcating her small space in her home; This was a dilemma and but there are several options when this occurs:

1. Use a minimalist design approach. Especially with contemporary pieces, you can easily simplify a frame design to ,minimize its impact in a room. For canvasses, float frames may be a good option. When you are forces to use a narrow mat border due to lack of wall space, it will probably look better to float the art over the mat using 1/2" border versus cutting a window in a mat with a 1" border.

2. For art on paper, try switching from a wider moulding to a narrower cap profile. This can buy you the space you need for the mat border width you want.

Kick-up your Mats with V-Grooves

Your probably wandering...what is a v-groove? It is a common form of a decorative Mat; it can be best described as two bevels that run side by side and come together within the core of the mat. The v-groove is a simple and elegant line that is cut into the mat, they can be oval, octagonal or anything else. The v-groove can also be a combination of multiple lines cut within the mat.

The v-groove can also add a hint of color ...this can be accomplished by using mat with a color core. For a more understated look consider a white v-groove on a white mat, a black mat with a black core, etc.

An example of a v-groove is above, the v-groove is the outer lines in the mat; As you can view the artwork above, one can see how a v-groove adds dimension to the artwork.
